Overview

The Water Corporation of WA sponsored a project to make use of the biogas generated by the Beenyup WWTP digestion process to supply electrical power and hot water to meet a significant portion of the plants’ requirements and in turn, reduce energy consumption, odour and impacts on the environment.

Scope

  • Construction of a biogas treatment plant incorporating a desulphurisation unit, dehumidifier

  • and activated carbon filter to substantially reduce H2S and siloxanes (silica based

  • compounds) and relative humidity levels to meet typical engine specifications

  • Installation/construction of an additional blower to convey gas through the biogas treatment

  • process and additional compressors to provide appropriate gas pressure to the engines

  • Installation/construction of two (2) off-packaged 1.5MW, 11kV reciprocating gas engine generator Combined

  • Heat and Power (CHP) units, housed in bunded, acoustic weather protective enclosures

  • Provision of SCADA remote control and monitoring at both the WWTP and the Water Corporation Operations Centre

HV Systems

  • Installation/construction of two (2) off-packaged 1.5MW, 11kV reciprocating gas engine generator Combined

  • Heat and Power (CHP) units.

  • Installation of 11kV NERs and Surge Diverters

  • Installation / construction / commissioning of 11kV switchgear, distribution network and required protection systems

  • Installation / construction / commissioning of 11kV / 22kV transformer and 22kV transmission network to existing infrastructure

LV Systems

  • Installation / construction / commissioning of new 415V MCCs and Distribution boards

  • Installation / commissioning of VVVF drives and Local Control Stations

  • Installation / construction / commissioning of plant lighting and small power

  • Hazardous area installation, inspection and certification

Instrumentation / Control / Communication Systems

  • Installation/construction of new communications network for protection / SCADA / process control and LAN

  • Installation/construction of new PLC’s, field I/O and field devices

  • Installation/construction of marshalling boxes and field instruments

  • Installation/construction of fibre optic network

  • Hazardous area installation, inspection and certification

Challenges

The project was awarded by the principal following removal of a previous Head Contractor.  It took a great team performance to get the design finished, project back on track and delivered to the principals’ specifications.

Constructing the new plant and services within the confines of the existing operation took additional planning and coordination between the operations and construction / commissioning teams.  Free issued vendor packaged constructed overseas need significant work to bring up to Australian Standards.

Another project delivered without incident, to a high standard , within budget and to the satisfaction of the client.
